2009 Taekwondo

Collegiate Nationals

in Rhode Island

The collegiate Taekwondo Nationals is a yearly tournament where qualified collegiate competitors from all over the country come together to compete.  It is held in a different state every year.

About a decade ago, Master Souza was a competitor at the Collegiate Nationals in Princeton, NJ.  "It was one of the best and most organized tournaments I have ever participated in.  It was very well run.  Having competed in two events, I was thankful for having placed in both of them.  I got a Bronze in sparring and Gold in forms," recalls Master Souza.

This year the Collegiate Nationals will be held

at Brown University in Providence, RI

[March 21st & 22nd – 2009]

If you have not yet seen a national level Taekwondo competitor in action, consider attending this event.  For a $10 spectator’s fee [$5 for kids], you will see how exciting the Olympic sport of Taekwondo can be when performed by world class athletes.  You won’t forget it.

We ask all our TKD students of all ages, and parents, to consider attending this event.  A TKD tournament is very exciting to watch.  It often leaves students feeling motivated and pumped about our sport.

No Mistakes

There are no mistakes.  Think back at the time when you learned to walk or ride a bike.  In both activities we made the mistake of falling [and probably still do].  Falling was necessary to perfect our technique of walking and riding a bike.

Here at Franklin Martial Arts, we believe that mistakes are not only helpful in our path to black belt, but also absolutely necessary.  Mistakes are underrated.  One good thing about making a mistake is that you get to try again, with added experience.  In activities like martial arts which require physical repetition, the only way to learn is by making mistakes and correcting them.

As a matter of fact, here is the secret: your success will be determined by how many mistakes you have made.  Your mistakes can only hurt you if they stop you.  Next time you make a mistake, remember it’s an oportunity to improve.  So try again.  =]

One At A Time

A friend of ours was walking down a deserted Mexican beach at sunset.  As he walked along, he began to see another man in the distance.  As he grew nearer, he noticed that the local native kept leaning down, picking something up and throwing it out into the water.  Time and again he kept hurling things out into the ocean.

As our friend approached even closer, he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach and, one at time, he was throwing them back into the water.

Our friend was puzzled.  He approached the man and said, “Good evening, friend.  I was wondering what you are doing.”

“I’m throwing these starfish back into the ocean.  You see, it’s low tide right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the shore.  If I don’t throw them back into the sea, they’ll die up here from lack of oxygen.”

“I understand,” my friend replied, “but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach.  You can’t possibly get to all of them.  There are simply too many.  And don’t you realize this is probably happening on hundreds of beaches all up and down this coast.  Can’t you see that you can’t possibly make a difference?”

The local native smiled, bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, “Made a difference to that one!”
